Udaipur: 10 Best Places to Visit

Udaipur: 10 Best Places to Visit

The moment you arrive in Udaipur, its beauty and charm instantly win you over. Known for its stunning lakes and elegant architecture, the city offers breathtaking views at every turn. I had the chance to spend nearly 30 days exploring Udaipur, and it exceeded all my expectations—especially as it was my first visit to Rajasthan. Here’s my list of the top 10 places to visit in Udaipur.

1. Gangaur Ghat

This was easily my favorite spot in the city. The calm atmosphere, soothing sounds of the ravan-hatta, fluttering pigeons, and clear waters create a peaceful experience. Evenings around sunset are the best time to visit. Sitting by the water with your feet dipped in and enjoying the natural ambiance is something you won’t want to miss—no music needed.

2. Ambrai Ghat

Located across Lake Pichola from Gangaur Ghat, this spot offers stunning views of the City Palace. While I visited often during the mornings, its real charm comes alive after sunset. Watching the illuminated palace reflect on the lake is truly mesmerizing. You can also catch views of the Taj Lake Palace and The Leela Palace from here. Enjoying a coffee at Ambrai Restaurant adds to the experience.

3. Jagdish Temple

Situated on the way to City Palace, this historic temple stands out for its intricate carvings, detailed pillars, and beautifully decorated interiors. Visiting during the aarti enhances the spiritual vibe. If you’re short on time, a quick visit can be completed in about 20 minutes.

4. City Palace

Overlooking Lake Pichola, this is Udaipur’s most iconic attraction. While the city has much more to offer, skipping the City Palace isn’t an option. I explored it with a guide, which made the experience more insightful. It took around two hours to fully explore the palace. Boat rides to Jagmandir are available here, though budget travelers might prefer boating at Doodh Talai instead.

5. Bagore Ki Haveli

Located right next to Gangaur Ghat, this haveli is now a museum showcasing traditional architecture and craftsmanship. It remains open until 5:30 PM, but the highlight is the evening cultural show from 7 PM to 8 PM featuring folk dances and puppet performances. It’s an unforgettable experience and a must-visit.

6. Fateh Sagar Lake

Like many lakes in Udaipur, this one is man-made. It features Nehru Garden in the center, accessible by boat. You’ll also find motorboat rides and plenty of food stalls nearby serving snacks like pav bhaji and Chinese dishes. Don’t forget to try kulhad chai while enjoying the lakeside vibe.

7. Monsoon Palace (Sajjangarh Fort)

Perched on the Aravalli hills, this palace offers panoramic views of Udaipur. You can drive up or take a jeep to reach the top. Watching the sunset from here is a memorable experience, with the entire “White City” spread out below.

8. Karni Mata Temple

Situated on a hilltop, this temple can be reached either by climbing around 500 steps or via a ropeway. It provides stunning views of the city. While I didn’t explore the temple interior, the sunrise views from here were incredibly peaceful.

9. Neemach Mata Temple

Located near Fateh Sagar Lake, reaching this temple requires a climb of about 900 meters. The effort is worth it, as you’re rewarded with beautiful views of the lake and even glimpses of Lake Pichola from the top.

10. Badi Lake

A quieter and less crowded spot, Badi Lake is perfect for those looking to explore beyond the usual tourist areas. Nearby Bahubali (Tiger) Hill is great for trekking. Visit in the evening for scenic views and sunsets, but make sure to leave before it gets too dark for safety reasons.

While there are many more places worth exploring, these are my personal top 10 in Udaipur. If you have other recommendations, feel free to share them. For details like timings and entry fees, you can check official tourism resources.
